LinkedIn is Doing Your Digital Footprint a Huge Favor
Go on Google and search your own name. You probably noticed that your LinkedIn profile is displayed on the first page of results. As The Business Journals notes, people are finding you via LinkedIn whether you like it or not.
As LinkedIn starts to add in new features and enhancements to the user experience, your profile will only be more visible than ever. This means it’s time do some serious editing. Here are a few tips to consider when putting your profile together.
1. Profile Picture – First impressions are everything, and on the internet, your first impression starts with your profile picture. In your photo, be sure that you’re dressed professionally. By professionally, we mean business casual (not a tuxedo or prom dress — and yes, it happens.) Have a clear or natural background. This ensures that the focus of the photo is you. If you’re taking the photo yourself, find a tripod or bookshelf to rest the phone on to avoid a ‘selfie arm.’ Speaking of selfie, that means no duckface either – show off your beautiful smile or relax your face.
2. Keywords – One of the keys to having a top-notch profile is having the right keywords in your profile. Think about what kind of words people would search on Google to find someone like you. For example, if you’re a Social Media Specialist, you should include phrases such as Social Media Specialist | Social Media Manager | Social Media Expert. You can include these keywords in your headline, summary, specialties, experience, recommendations and skills. And, make sure to include these keywords multiple times – it’s okay to repeat.
3. Detail, detail, detail – Your LinkedIn profile is your chance to sell yourself. And, quite simply, the more complete your profile is, the more likely your profile will be found. From the experience and projects section to the skills, awards & recommendations section, make sure to include as much detail as possible. Treat this like you would treat your resume.
