High School Internships Matter for Students and Employers
September 2, 2026

When GetMyInterns reached out to BoardroomPR to help promote its groundbreaking internship program, it was an easy yes since our statewide Florida digital public relations agency creates space for students to glean from our team during their summer breaks.
Transitioning from the classroom to the professional world can be scary, but early work experience changes everything. Statistics show that only 2% of high schoolers get internships.
For over a decade, South Florida–based GetMyInterns.org has bridged that gap, helping more than 40,000 students connect with real-world opportunities. By linking public high schools, local employers, and college students, the platform offers summer and year-round internships.
The program has seen success, with 250 high schools and nearly 10,000 registered businesses across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as well as Houston.
We recently had the pleasure to observe a collaborative effort with Goodwill Industries and GetMyInterns for the launch of a new AI Training Pilot Program for Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) in Miami, designed to equip students with artificial intelligence skills that complements their workplace experience.
When we were approached with this project, our team quickly envisioned the great visuals – student/teacher interactions, live demonstration and the many interview possibilities. We pitched the media alert a day before to television outlets with the simple goal of securing what the client wanted. The request resulted with WSVN’s attendance in the class and televised the same day.
Alex and his team had the opportunity to talk about the internship program on radio stations WRMF, WEAT, WIRK, WFTL, WMBX & WMEN and on the South Florida Sunday’s podcast.
Why Internships Work
Early Career Exploration
Interests are discovered in high school and college. Early workforce exposure allows students to test potential career paths, discover their passions, and build professional confidence long before graduation.
Unique Hands-On Skills
While classrooms provide theory, internships teach hands-on application. Industry-based learning gives students practical skills, workplace experience, and problem-solving abilities that standard coursework can not.
Expands Professional Networks
Early exposure to mentors, business leaders, and local companies opens doors that allow students to build professional networks, secure references, and gain future job opportunities before completing their education.
Co-founder and Managing Director Alex Funkhouser wants students empowered to pursue their passions with confidence. If you are a business leader who wants to help jumpstart the career of a student with talent, learn more about the GetMyIntern program in Broward or Miami-Dade counties.
BoardroomPR offers college students the opportunity to intern with our experienced team, which ocassionally leads to employment with us after graduation. Contact us to learn more.
