BoardroomPR has had great success getting our clients published in the opinion pages of local papers and trade journals.

It is the goal of public relations professionals to help their clients get the word out about their business, special projects or topics that affect consumers. PR is more than fashioning a press release with the hope that media outlets will reach out to interview your client. Sometimes, clients have opportunities to present themselves as thought leaders on various topics. The quickest way to do this is to write a guest commentary/opinion piece.

For many years, I was part of the Opinion Page at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, where I selected content for both the Op Ed and Letters to the Editor pages. Back then, media outlets offered more print space and opportunities for content placement. Fast forward to today where social media dominates, creating less of a need for copy editors.

As PR professionals, we want our clients’ articles to not only be seen, but get published.

Here are a few tips to improve your chances of getting published:

Word count

Do not assume that you can submit a 1,000-word essay and have it published somewhere with a 700-word limit. Review the publication’s website to determine the preferred word count for Op Eds and letters to the editor.

Seize the moment

It’s not who you know, but what you know. As news events unfold daily, there is always an opportunity to put your knowledge into words. Remember, you are the expert.

Avoid industry talk

When writing for trade publications, use all the industry verbiage you want, but elsewhere the reader might not know what you are talking about.

Include contact information

This might seem unimportant, but publications want to make sure writers are legitimate. Always include your name, address and contact number with your submission.

Follow instructions

If you follow everything you’ve just read, you will be closer to the finish line. Believe me, this former newspaper person appreciated it then, and I’m sure whoever you send something to now will too.
