What’s New on Instagram in 2025: Updates and Trends
February 5, 2025
Did you know that Instagram is the fourth-largest social network with over 2 billion users? They recently rolled out major updates for 2025 and BoardroomPR’s top Florida social media department is staying ahead of these changes. This proactive approach is essential for keeping our clients’ social media strategies relevant and effective. Here’s what you need to know about Instagram’s latest new features and updates:
Instagram’s Profile Grid Gets a Makeover
Driven by the popularity of Reels and vertical content, Instagram has changed its profile grid layout. Instead of the traditional square format, posts on the grid now appear in a rectangular shape.
Things to keep in mind when creating your content:
- Posts should be made in a 4:5 ratio (1080 x 1350 pixels).
- While posts should be made in a 4:5 ratio, they appear in the preview grid in a 3:4 ratio, which means the sides of your posts will be cropped. Make sure to keep important elements centered to avoid them being cut off.

Longer Reels: More Time, More Storytelling
Our video production pros focus on the traditional short-form video for Instagram Reels which originally were limited to 90 seconds, but now they can be up to 3 minutes long.
What does this mean:
- More room for in-depth social media storytelling, whether it’s tutorials, behind-the-scenes content, or engaging narratives.
- While the time limit has increased, keeping videos engaging, fast-paced and value-driven remains essential for audience retention and optimal performance.
Instagram Trial Reels: A New Way to Test Content
Testing content before publishing has always been a challenge on social media, but Instagram is introducing Trial Reels as a solution. This new feature enables brands and creators to experiment with different video styles, formats, and messages before pushing them to their audience.
How it works:
- Trial Reels are shown only to random Instagram users, not your followers.
- They won’t appear on your profile or in your Reels tab.
- Performance insights from Trial Reels can help refine content strategy before sharing it with your audience.
This feature is particularly beneficial for brands testing ad creatives, influencers experimenting with new trends, or businesses exploring different messaging approaches.

Keeping Up with the Trends
While these changes may seem overwhelming for those managing their own social profiles, they present exciting opportunities for brands and creators to refine their content strategies, boost engagement, and stay ahead of digital trends.
